Day 201

I got a hold of Shane, went to his house today and picked up fish. These were a 12" Oscar, great shape, extra thick, and a 9" Pleco, five Red Devil Jaguar fry. The Oscar and fry went into tank#18 and the Pleco went into 380gal. I will post pictures soon as camera charges. Thanks Shane, wife and kids, enjoy the donuts!  E-mailed a guy about a free Pacu, seem to be 3"-4" in size. Still working out pickup, he lives by Shane but missed e-mail in time, and the drive is far from me. Bought 2-40W bulbs 6500K to brighten up 380gal., worked great took the yellowish color out of tank, from light. Bought some of the 2" pvc for pump to go on 380gal. Cleaned tanks#9-#12, 25% water change, vacuum gravel and flilter cleanings.

Day 199

Vieja in his new home- 380gal., he fits right in!
55gal. with cherry stand and hood is sold, to Rob's Dad, pick-up next week. Cleaning last panel on 140gal. today, put together maybe Saturday. Tank#13, 380 gal., vacuum gravel and 25% water change. Vieja put into 380gal. today, from tank#19, looks great! Rob's bringing over large Flowerhorn tonight. Taking 3 filters to sell for him at firehall tomorrow...update: filter pickup from craigslist guy fell through, no pickup at firehall tomorrow. Why so many unreliable weirdos on craigslist? I don't know. Going to get Flowerhorn next week at Rob's and help him move double 55gal. upstairs.

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Day 197

Still in disassemble mode of 140 gal., going to take side panels off and clean today. Cleaning filter in tank#17 today, and full cleanings of tanks #14-#16. Moved catfish and 2 plecos from tank#16 to 380gal., getting to big for 75 gal.

Monday, January 24, 2011

Day 196

The second tear down of 140 gal.!

Yea its for sale again.
Lima Shovelnose catfish nose is getting better, fish looks weak, try to feed tonight. Got a call on 55gal. on craigslist, guy wants to check it out this weekend, if not Rob's dad might buy it. Items on craigslist are slow sellers now. Cleaned tank #20 and #21, vacuum gravel and filter cleanings, 25% water change. Got two panels off 140gal, and inside silicone taken off, I'll shoot for a reseal by this weekend. Changed water only in tanks#18 and #19, water change 25% and vacuum gravel in #17.

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Day 194

Lima Shovelnose catfish with the broken nose has the piece missing today! I don't know if he ate it or others in tank did. Seems raw, I will watch and medicate if needed. He is still not eating.
Female Flowerhorn put in tank#21, beat up by male, no eggs. I put her back in her own tank. Putting plastic edging on top and bottom of 140 gal., I'll post up pictures as I do it...flipped over and bottom seal on back of tank didn't bond. Started cutting all silicone off for reseal...update as I go. Running into problems picking up Shane's fish today, going to call and maybe pickup Monday. Also relisted 55gal. cherry stand and hood on craigslist for $110, last guy never showed.

Day 192 afternoon

I had some silicone leftover from the 140gal. job, so I decided to try and fix old metal frame tank with slate bottom. Third picture is of 10gal. that I took apart. I had an old bottom from a 55gal. that fit in metalframe tank. The way you fix these is to place glass panel over slate, silicone does not bond to slate. The side panel I used from 10gal. Failed!...the side panel didn't fit by 1/8" or less, and I forced it, it snapped. Cleaned up, try again later, I need a side piece thats not so tight. Female Flowerhorn in tank#11 started nesting, cleaning, full color, and tube dropped. I tried to introduce Flowerhorn from tank#4. All she did was beat him up, so I put her in tank#21 again with large male Flowerhorn, and the mating dance is on again...I'll keep you posted. Maybe eggs this time.

Day 192

I inspected the 140gal. this morning, two issues were found. First is a large air bubble in silicone on bottom right, this air bubble was cut and filled. I was sure to have new silicone touch bottom and side panel because silicone has a hard time sticking to itself, this bubble was not between panels but inside tank. The other issue is one side panel when cut at the factory was not a 90* cut, when we put this panel next to another, the 1/2" edge was half sealed. I worked from outside of tank pushing silicone in, filling gap. These two issues could have been avoided, just slow down and check all seals(too much vodka-haha). Although it is advised not to mess with newly sealed tank because it starts to cure in first 20 min. Putting plastic top and bottom on tank Sat., leak test Monday.

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Day 191

140 leaker in the process of reassembly! 48 hours to cure, Rob and I put it together in 30 min. and one vodka.

Day 189

Lima Shovelnose ran into side of tank(380 gal.) and broke nose...and he's not eating.
I have lots of heaters, 18 running. In this time, energy is on everyone's mind, saving energy that is. I keep all my heaters at 80*, I thought. I'm going to try to keep the tanks at average 75*, and see if I can decrease my kW/day usage. I have to factor in outside temperature and my setting up and taking down tanks. I am aware my fish will be less active and eat less. Here is a current list of tank temps.

Day 175 cont'

Tank #13(380gal.) vacuumed gravel and 25% water change. Moved Angels, Discus, lrg. Grourami, Algae eater and Bala Shark from tank#5 to tropical tank#8, moved Electric Yellow Lab from tank#5 to tank#12, and Lace Catfish, Pitcus cat from tank#5 and small Oscar from tank#16 to 380gal. This was all done so large Oscar in tank#18 could be moved to tank#5, and divider lifted in tank#18 for Flowerhorn alone.

Day 175

It pains me to inform you that Oscar in tank#6 was mortally wounded day after Christmas. This Oscar, I got from Nic, broke down divider and got on the Red Devil side of tank. Oscar died 3 days after injured, R.I.P. I still struggle with the death of a fish that I cared for. This hobby is a learning experience, still, after 30 years. So I move on, and make my hobby better from my failures...I moved the two small Parrots and African Leaf fish from tank#5 to the 380gal., no problems. Tanks#14-#20 were cleaned over the holiday, filter changes, cleanings and 25% water changes. The new filter pump for the 380gal. is ready to be swapped in, maybe Wed. night? Rob is moving some tanks on Thur., going over there to help out. I might hold a tank and some fish for him. More tomorrow, keep the hobby strong and don't let your failures stray you from this great fish keeping(collecting) experience!
